How Much Does Smoking Cost You?

Your yearly cost is simply: cost per use × uses per day × 365. The only hard part is getting honest inputs — and most people underestimate the second one.

The formula

Cost per use = pack (or pod, tin) price ÷ uses per pack
Yearly cost = cost per use × uses per day × 365

Use your own local price — tobacco and vape prices vary enormously between countries, states and even shops. The examples below use round illustrative prices, not real averages.

Worked examples

Habit (example prices)Per dayPer monthPer year
10 cigarettes a day, $10 per pack of 20$5.00~$152$1,825
20 cigarettes a day, $10 per pack of 20$10.00~$304$3,650
1 vape pod every 2 days, $6 per pod$3.00~$91$1,095
8 nicotine pouches a day, $6 per tin of 20$2.40~$73$876

Month figures use an average month of 30.4 days.

Get the inputs right

  • Count, don’t guess, uses per day. Log for a week and take the average. Estimates from memory tend to run low, especially for vaping and pouches.
  • Include everything you buy — lighters, papers, filters, coils, chargers, replacement devices. They add up.
  • Mixed habits: calculate each product separately and add them together.
  • Price changes: update the price when you buy at a new price, so the estimate follows reality.

What cutting down is worth

Savings from reducing follow the same formula, using the uses you didn’t have:

Money saved = cost per use × (old uses per day − new uses per day) × days

Using the 20-a-day example: getting down to 12 a day saves 8 × $0.50 = $4 a day — about $120 a month. Going fully nicotine-free saves the whole $10 a day, roughly $3,650 over a year.

It helps to make that number concrete. Pick something the money will pay for — a trip, a bill, a gift — and check the running total when a pause gets hard.

What this number leaves out

A price calculator only captures what you pay at the counter. It doesn’t include indirect costs people sometimes mention — insurance, cleaning, replacing damaged items — which differ too much from person to person to estimate honestly. Treat your total as a floor, not a ceiling.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. Smoking, vaping and nicotine use carry health risks. If you want help quitting — including with nicotine replacement or prescription support — talk to a doctor or pharmacist. In the US, free coaching is available at smokefree.gov or 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Add the price of each product once, then just log as usual. The app estimates what you spend by day or week, and once you go nicotine-free it keeps a running estimate of money saved and uses avoided. Private, on your device.
